Hi Hamish,
Since our first chats about this series, I've been listening to the Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould as a daily meditation on the instrument's attendance to the moment. The object of the piano, its evolution over centuries, its designers, its material and auditory characteristics and the spirit of the musician, Glenn, his cognitive agency, his biology, all work in concert to attend the act of making music in the moment. I always hear a kind of polarity when I'm listening to the work, I hear his humming, I hear the age in his voice, and then I hear the keys struck with the textured human cadence that only an older artist could bring. I hear the machine and the man in tandem.
Our last chat via Zoom was really clarifying, and I would like to propose the ideas contained within the following pages as the trajectory of our project. To sum it up though, because that's what summary pages are for.
The ring bears witness and attends to the moment. A ring turns through a hypothetical play head, a line implied in our composition. Where the line meets the ring is 'now.' The ring carries its own scale, each jewel a note, attending the moment.
